Product Review: Old Soul Artisan Candles

I gave Old Soul Artisan a try and am here to share my experiences with the company! The fragrances I purchased were Avilésor, Annabel Lee, and Book of Spells… but there were SO MANY MORE that I really wanted to try! The good news is, the company offers a tea light sampler set so you can try multiple fragrances before committing to a full candle. But before we start picking scents, let’s dive in and look at the company and products.

About the Brand

Here is what sold me on the company right off the bat:

  1. The candles are based on literature. From fairy tales and mythology to Edgar Allen Poe, each scent is a unique blend designed to capture the feel of the literature it was paired with. As an avid reader, this literary touch appealed to my inner bookworm!
  2. Old Soul Artisan is a small, US-based company in New Jersey. The brand started with one woman who ran the operation herself, including scent development, acquiring raw materials, hand-pouring each candle, packing orders, handling the customer service… wow! The company has since expanded to a small team of three part-time employees and two full-time (counting the founder). I love supporting small companies whenever I have the chance.
  3. A dollar from every online sale is donated to wolf conservation. How cool is that?!

About the Products

The candles are blended by hand and produced in small batches to ensure a perfect blend every time. The website claims they use these simple ingredients: natural soy wax, cotton wick, premium fragrances, and magic. But the real winning feature: the candles are 100% vegan and contain no dyes, parabens, phthalates, or other toxins, so it’s a clean-burning candle.

Another neat aspect of the products is that, as I mentioned, they’re based on literature. But the Avilésor candle was extra special because wasn’t just based on a book or folktale; it was a joint collaboration with the author. For more info, check out this article.

Pros & Cons

The only con was that the price was higher than what I would usually spend on a candle. But, until recently, I’ve been guilty of always shopping the cheap $5 Walmart candles. Now that I’ve had a taste of the good stuff, I’m not planning on going back to the cheap ones! Natural candles have been shown to release less particulate matter into the air as they burn than candles made from paraffin, so sticking with natural ingredients such as soy wax, coconut wax, beeswax, palm wax, or vegetable wax is a healthier alternative.

That leads me right into the pros of this company’s product! Now that I’ve learned more about the potential harmful chemicals and particulates released into the air when burning certain kinds of candles, I feel more comfortable burning a 100% vegan soy candle than I do picking up a cheap candle in the supermarket.

The fragrances were noticeable but not overpowering, and I didn’t feel that the candles burned too quickly, so I got my money’s worth. I noticed that the scents seemed to have layers to them, especially the Avilésor (mystical forest) one. Sometimes I caught floral notes; other times I felt like I was on the edge of a cedar forest. Annabel Lee (sea mist and magnolia blossom) had a wonderfully light floral scent that immediately transported me to a spring day. Book of Spells (ancient book and secret ritual) reminded me of chocolate-covered cherries.

I loved the journeys these candles evoked through the sense of smell. I want to try different fragrances and pair them with specific reading material to enhance the adventures! My ranking of the three candles I’ve tried:

  1. Avilésor
  2. Annabel Lee
  3. Book of Spells

The candles themselves are beautifully designed; I especially love the raven imprinted into the wax seal on top of the lid. Such a unique touch! Everything was nicely packaged and included some goodies in the box— I even got a free tea light sample!

Final Notes

Overall, I was very satisfied with my purchase and will definitely be ordering again. I love that this company is not only a small USA-based business, but also that it partners with good causes and supports wolf conservation and indie authors. I felt like whoever packed my candles did so with care. Old Soul Artisan takes pride in their work and appreciates their customers in a way that small businesses often excel at in comparison to big corporations.

Recommended?

Absolutely!
